Holi hai!

To elaborate, today is the Festival of Colours, lovingly called Holi. Where people wear white and play each other silly with powdered colours, water balloons and even eggs sometimes all morning. And the day ends in the late afternoon with a big feast. Its my favourite day of the year. I get to wear white, be with my family and friends, dance and eat.

The above only happens in India though. The last time I went home, it was March 14th. It was Holi and a national holiday. I landed around 3.30 pm, which is when the festivities start dying. But my family arrnaged a big gathering in my honour and they waited all day to celebrate it with me. And celebrate we did. Sunshine, colours, water balloons, water hoses, running from water hoses, laughing. And more laughing. It was the best day.

Alas.

In other news, in another 'cultured' country of the world, a 75-year old woman was sentenced to 40 lashes and 3 months in prison for 'mingling' with two men who were not close relatives. Now, I know, the word 'mingling' especially in quotes arouses some keen interest. But all she really did was ask them to bring 5 loaves of bread from the store because she was either too old to walk to the store or she was too poor to afford the bread. Or maybe both. In her defence, she said, that she breastfed one of the men when he was a baby, which establishes her maternal relation with her. And the other man was his best friend.

The two men were also sentenced to lashing and prison.

Did that make sense to you?
Good. Me neither.
